Gender Roles In Music
Gender roles are present in every aspect of society. From a women's place is in the kitchen to boys don't cry, statements like this run rampant throughout our society. The entertainment business has also done a great job in contributing to these already present gender roles, especially the music industry. Music has often had a certain way of portraying women, especially rap music. Rap has often portrayed women as inferior to men, and in many cases, not as a human but as an object to be obtained. Derogatory terms such as bitch, hoe, and slut have often been used in rap lyrics to refer to women. Through their lyrics, you get a sense that Many male rappers feel that falling in love with a woman is a weakness, that the more women that they have sex with the better. This "player" mentality is a male gender role that is presented throughout rap. An example of this player mentality can be found in a song entitled "The Player Way" by Mase. The chorus of the song goes like this. "Everything that I do be all about the loot, I be kicking up dust in my Polo boots, getting blowed on the 'dro taking smoke up my nose, I give the world to a woman but I don't love hoes, I'm a player baby and don't you forget it, you need to get with i
In "Business," one of his songs from his latest album, "The Eminem Show," Eminem has a lyric that states, ". " This song shows that the player mentality places money s first priority, sex second, and women last. He uses the phrase "quit it" as if women were an object that whenever you become bored with you could simply replace with another. Not all rap lyrics promote this player image. He views them as actual human beings and feels that they deserve the same respect that men do. This song also refers to women as "hoes. " A hoe by definition is a tool used for digging, and the slang definition for hoe is a prostitute (Dictionary. Which road will you choose, the one that Eminem and Mase chose, or the one that LL Cool J chose? It is up to you whether you buy into these gender roles or not. This I feel is attributed to the fact that it is widely accepted in the rap community and viewed as cool.
