Frankenstein: Lust, Love, and Sin

             Kenneth Branagh bases the film Frankenstein on the 18th century gothic novel by Mary Shelly. The film is set in the late 17th century in Geneva. Victor Frankenstein, the films main character, is an aspiring doctor, who becomes obsessed with preserving life after his mother’s death. The death of his mother is the turning point of the film. It is Victor's rage within grief that spurs him in his research. Elizabeth, an orphan, is taken in by the Frankenstein family and becomes Victor’s love interest. Elizabeth and Frankenstein are considered brother and sister, but only by name. Frankenstein leaves to become a student in the medical field. Here he engulfs himself in his own ideas of medical science, rather than those being taught. Victor feels that no human should have to die. By doing this, he becomes completely obsessed with his project. He fears no consequences, but believes this kind of research will benefit mankind. He is able to gather enough!
             information and research to create another human life. He builds a creature in the appearance of man and gives it life. Once the experiment is complete he has in turn defied science and created an ugly and ghastly creature. Frankenstein now realizes he has indeed committed a sin. The creature Victor creates is given no name, but is the whole basis of the film. The creature is repeatedly rejected by society, but the monster proves intelligent, and later highly articulate. The creature only hopes to find love and companionship but receives none. The creature, which is denied by the world, wants revenge. After Frankenstein deserts his creation he goes back home to marry Elizabeth and keeps his horrific secret. The monster eventually tracks his father down. and tries to persuade Victor into making a mate for him. After Victor agrees a wave of remorse makes him destroy the female.
