Freedom Of Speech
"Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience, above all liberties." These words were written 350 years ago by famous 17th writer John Milton in his 1644 book Areopagitica, in which he spoke out against censorship. Milton's battle against censorship did not end in 1644 however. Freedom of speech and expression is an issue that has been very controversial throughout history. For centuries, the freedom to say whatever you want has been banned and strictly enforced, mainly to keep revolutionaries from speaking out against government corruption. The people fought back however and won their right to voice their beliefs. Today, in the 21st century, these fundamental rights are again in question. The government's of the United States and Canada have sprung up much debate over issues involving censorship and freedom of speech. These issues include music and the internet. These areas of controversy continue to spring up in the n! The most major issue involving freedom of speech that exists today is over music. The use of log-ins, passwords, and rating systems on pages on the internet are now commonly being instituted. The internet itself springs up many individual issues such as pornography, hate and guides to crime such as The Anarchist's Cookbook and The Poor Man's James Bond. Another problem involving pornography is child pornography or "kiddie porn" as it is referred to on the internet. Eminem has been accused of violating hate crimes against homosexuals and w!omen alike. There should not be any debate over a topic such as this unless a crime is in fact being committed. However, freedom of speech is something that is fundamentally guaranteed to us and should not be taken away or limited unless a law is being broken. In the year 2000, controversy has been raised over the lyrics of a new rapper, Eminem. Also readily available on the internet are guides to committing crimes and making bombs. These accusations cannot stick however, because the United States allows artists to freely say whatever they like in their songs. 's freedom of speech had been violated and they were not convicted of any offences. As well he has lawsuits filed against him by his mother and ex-wife for things he said about them in his songs. For example, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, the notorious Columbine shooters, got instructions off the internet on how to make small bombs and they used these bombs in their attack on their school.
