Violence and video games

As technological advancements continue to plunge the consumer market, media researches keep pace by critiquing the mediums. Companies like Sony, Nintendo, and Rockstar, are giving these media researchers plenty to think about. After some careful research video game producers and marketers, are under fire for very controversial material scripted in these games. The game that is taking the blunt of the criticism is Grand Theft Auto, made by Rockstar productions. "The Grand Theft Auto franchise is one of the most recognized video game brands on the market, on the night of the game's release, gamers lined up outside the doors of retailers across the country so they could pick up their versions." (source ). It's the popularity of this game that has many concerned parents and researchers looking for answers. "Video games are in 80% of U.S. homes with children; they generated $6 billion in 2000 and $11 billion by 2003." (Wagner, C). The problem then is the exposures these youths have to the material in these video games, and how that exposure affects them. The violence and aggressive behavior included in these games are death, shootings, rapes, drug dealing, and fights. The more problematic and i

I believe that this kind of research provides you with in depth analysis and detail that wouldn't otherwise be available to you. What is it about the game that makes one want to re-enact what they have seen. All of this research will show that violent behavior can be linked to interactive video game play. The bullets also killed 45 year old Aaron Hamel a registered nurse traveling in a separate car" (Good Morning America). Last year's Grand Theft Auto III became the best-selling game ever for Playstation 2, perhaps because it gave law-abiding people a forum for disemboweling society. Finally, Mary Lou Dickerson included in her bill to ban the selling of violent games to anyone under the age of seventeen, that there have been five murders in California that are linked to Grand Theft Auto. While a few cigarettes will not immediately give you cancer, continued use will almost certainly have a bad effect. Grand Theft Auto was also linked to teenagers in New Jersey and California who have been plotting and committing both robberies and murders. If indeed thse games do cause aggressive or violent behavior, there must be a system in place to minimize the deviant acts. The Research To answer the research question I will rely on the studies that have been conducted by the various high profile media research teams. Craig Anderson said, "The active nature of the learning environment of the video game suggests this medium is potentially more dangerous than television and movie media. Often times a kid is not old enough to buy the games so he asks his parents for it. After I would log five or six hours playing Grand Theft Auto, I found myself mocking Tommy Vercetti who is the main character of the game. This first hand perspective combined with the literature material on this subject will provide me with enough data to make an accurate decision on the causes and affects of these violent video games. This is interactive Pulp Fiction violent art without a speck of morality.
