Throughout United States history many policies regarding international affairs have been developed and used in the best interests of the U.S. These policies have greatly contributed to the growth and development of the United States during difficult times. The main purpose of these policies was to protect U.S. interests from negative foreign influence. During different periods in U.S. history, these policies were adapted in order to keep peace, prevent war, and in some cases expand America's boundaries. From the late 18th century to the early nineteen hundreds the U.S. went through three such eras that turned a small, weak country into a huge, prosperous United States.
             In the first era from 1790 to 1825, the United States was just beginning to develop on its own apart from Great Britain and needed time to form a strong government before it did anything else. It was several years earlier that the Constitution was written and the first president was elected. The United States was still amending the Constitution at the end of the 1700s and throughout much of the early 1800s was setting up boundaries and resolving problems with nearby tribes. The U.S. was also trying to eliminate European control of nearby territories such as Florida and land further out west. Another issue that the United States faced was whether to have a national bank. All these issues contributed to the fact that the United States still needed to develop and didn't need the hassle of dealing with outside nations.
