History

The humble beginnings of the New World could not have been anymore different. The stark contrast between the three main colonies was quite apparent. The motivation for the immigrants to move varied. Some were moving to avoid religious persecution, others for economic reasons. While others also moved due to political reasons. The three main areas the settlers moved to was the Chesapeake Bay Colony, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the Middle colonies. The different environments and location made for different colonists and different lifestyles. The very first people to settle in the New World were the Jamestown colonists. They arrived in America in the early 1600's. Their main motivation for moving to America was to escape the economic hardships that were gripping England. The growing population caused a lack of jobs, which in turn caused a large group of desperate people. The Virginia Company funded the first settlement in the Chesapeake Bay region. But with experience and perseverance all three colonies grew and became the foundation for America. The Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. Shipbuilding, fishing and trading became their economy. Religion was always at the center of the Pilgrims lives. Like the Pilgrims the Quakers made their journey to avoid religious persecution. They moved to avoid religious persecution. Churches sprang up and soon a school was built to educate clergymen. The native people, starvation, poor sanitation and difficult environments. The next people to make the journey across the "pond" were the Pilgrims. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Because of the hardships that faced Quakers in England they felt their chances were greater in the New World. The ability to generate some profits was almost impossible. Nature against man has always seemed such a romantic notion. The Quakers landed in Pennsylvania in 1681. Although the colonies were different in many aspects they also shared common traits.
