Legalization

             Legalization of medical and personal use of cannabis has been debated for over fifty years. There are many different views on the perspective of legalization of marijuana. Decimalization of marijuana has been happening in the United States since Nixon's term in 1972. Cannabis has been used as far back as we can remember and the use of it has almost tripled in the United States since the seventies. The plant has many other uses than smoking it. The widespread use of marijuana has lead to the development of over ten thousand strains of the plant.
             The reason for this plant being judged and legal is because of a mild hallucinogen called tetra hydra cannabinol or better known as THC. The plant itself has many purposes besides smoking it for pleasure. The stalk of the hemp plant has been used for fiber for thousands of years. The hemp fibers are ten times stronger than cotton and have a longer life expectance. The seeds are a great source of oil that is used for paint, varnish, and fine oils. Since about 1937, the hemp plant has been unavailable for these uses.
             More recently marijuana has been proven to have a medical purpose as well. A few proven purposes of medical cannabis uses include, "relief of certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms caused by such illnesses as multiple sclerosis, cancer, glaucoma, and AIDS" (Elders, Jocelyn M.D.). Also marijuana can be used to help treat eating disorders. This plant has many uses and is even less addictive than cigarettes and alcohol because weed is not physically addictive.
             Today there are many changes happening around this issue of legalization of marijuana. In Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Vermont have endorsed versions of cannabis decriminalization.
