Inherit the Wind
The word protagonist can be classified with such terms as hero, "good guy", and the lead role. On the other hand, the word antagonist is utilized to define villainous and heinous characters. In the 1955 classic play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, Inherit the Wind, many characters can be categorized as either. Inherit the Wind was a parody of the Great Monkey Trial of 1925, in which the state of Tennessee opposed schoolteacher John Scopes in a controversy over the theory of evolution in court. In this particular play, Bert Cates, symbolically portraying Scopes, is brought to trial for teaching evolution in the classroom, which was highly inappropriate and unthinkable at the time. In all, he was brought to trial for his beliefs, which is somewhat indecorous in itself. The man who opposed him, the prosecuting attorney, Matthew Harrison Brady (equivalent of the real prosecuting attorney in the Scopes trial, William Jennings Bryan), was a strong believer in the Bible, and concludes that Bert Cates is a sinner who is an evil-lutionist, as he unwittingly called them. an attack upon the law which you have so wisely placed among the statutes of the state. Matters get worse with the arrival of Matthew Harrison Brady, the Bible-preaching prosecuting attorney. Throughout the war of morals, he became the final victor, a man who set a precedent for those who came too late to see the actual events. He was a visionary who stood by his beliefs, rather than giving up and facing nothing. He had to get involved in such a matter to place his thoughts on anything that clashed with his own faith just to get worthless publicity, because he needed something to complain about. He is, therefore, the antagonist, and will ultimately find himself defeated. Cates was found guilty, and fined five hundred dollars for his virtual crime. His goal is also destroyed, and that is to crush the evolutionists. Being somewhat of a moral radical, he decided to teach it to his class one day. He is the exact opposite of Cates, except that they both preach what they believe, and both aren't willing to give up their faith to pursue this matter.
