romeo and juliet

The role of fate in ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ impacts on the overall tone and level of emotion evidenced in the ending. Fate is where people believe something happens for a reason and that their destiny is planned and everything is inevitable. Others however, believe the future is controlled by a person’s own actions. It is evident that some passages in the prologue are symbols that Romeo and Juliet’s death was fate, “The fearful passage of their death-marked love”, “From forth the fatal lions of these two foes; A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” . In ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ fate is one of the main themes, described as having power over many events in the play. While fate is blamed as the ultimate cause of the mishaps, the real explanation is rather the loss of self-control. The poor choices, or mishaps, directly contribute to the death of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet, for example, decided that she would take control of her own destiny by taking a potion that rendered her unconscious. She believed that it would remove her from the obligation of marrying Paris. Consequently, Juliet’s rebellion against her own fate caused the death of Romeo and ultimately herself.

Fate was the driving force

. . .
Friar Laurence concocts a plan for Juliet to render her unconscious and to create an illusion for her parent to think she is dead. Nevertheless the letter was delivered but perhaps fate planned that Romeo was never meant to get the letter. All throughout the play it seemed that fate did not allow Romeo and Juliet to be together. Even though Juliet knew that is was forbidden, she was not able to overcome the supreme inevitable emotion of love. This poor choice ultimately destroyed both of their lives. One of the noted instances where fate is blamed for a mishap is when Romeo curses out he is supposedly a fortune’s fool. “Two households, both alike in dignity”, “From ancient grudge to mutiny. At first it seems as though Romeo missing the letter is pure misfortune, it is actually Friar Laurence fault for the letter not being directly delivered. The two rivalled families; Montague and Capulet were renowned for its rivalry all across Verona. Here it is seen how fate has misguided the letter and Romeo had no way of knowing that Juliet was alive. Juliet was aware of the strong enmity and if she had known that Romeo was a Montague she would have not fallen in love with him. Consequently it would allow her to be with Romeo for eternity without the parents interfering. Since he realizes that these events will take place, he should try to control them as much as possible by keeping a cool head and not letting his emotions rule him, as it is seen to be the case. Even though at the end, a large contribution to Romeo and Juliet’s death was due to poor personal choices, we can’t put the blame simply towards human error.
