Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be one of America's greatest and most influential storytellers, poets and literary critics. Poe's works are generally recognized as the first works of mystery, horror, and science fiction. His wide range of genres and interests can be found in his over seventy pieces of fiction. He managed to convey the feel of his surroundings, and the feel of the era in which he lived, and translate them into powerful stories and poems.Poe's greatest influence is found in murder mystery and detective stories. His story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is considered to be the first murder mystery written. Many past and modern fictional detectives, such as Sherlock Holmes, can be traced back to Poe's Detective Dupin. This story concentrated on the facts of the case, rather then just the actions of the case, to solve the mystery. Poe declared that a poem must be short and of strong construction. In the "Cask of Amontillado" Poe's depiction of a man buried alive, as an act of revenge, is detailed to the point that the reader feels that he is within the tunnels viewing the actions of the narrator. These unusual talents were demonstrated in most of his stories and poems. His strange themes and vivid details were not accepted during his lifetime, but have since been acknowledged as brilliant works. The vivid details and unusual themes in his horror stories have been used as a guide in modern horror writing. Another style of writing that can be associated with Poe is science fiction. Poe's most famous poem, "The Raven", shows his ability to satisfy both commercial and critical desires. Poe's story "The Gold Bug" was a mystery, with built in clues that leads the reader on a treasure hunt. His first tale of terror, "Morella", describes the death and re-birth of a woman. He basically started a new genre of writing with the murder mystery, and he was not afraid to write about truly unpopular topics. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Purloined Letter" illustrate Poe's obsession with detail, and his desire to write an intellectual murder mystery. At the time of their writings Poe's peers considered tales such as "A Descent into the Maelstrom" and "The Unparalleled Adventure of one Hans Pfaall" laughable. Poe is most popular for his stories of horror. This was a concept ahead of its time. Poe's contributions to literature are numerous.
