             What makes a person laugh? Many things can make different people laugh. If someone were to ask a person, "What makes you laugh?" The person would likely respond by saying something to the effect of, "Something that is funny." What is beyond "just funny"? Debated causes of laughter are: everyday life, pain and embarrassment, and non-congruent situations. All three of these topics are the foundation in making someone at least crack a smile.
             Humor can be defined as a comic quality causing amusement (Random House Dictionary 646). There are many different types of humor, many ways in which to express your emotion. Different actors for example, may use different techniques. Jim Carey, a famous actor/comedian, uses his awkward body language to humor his audiences. Another example would be Robin Williams, who appeals to his fans with hilarious impressions. Comedians often use the "everyday life" topic for most of their routines simply because more people can relate to that. When someone laughs at pain and/or embarrassment it is usually due to a lack of maturity. According as the man is, so you must humor him (Bartlett's 109b). One would consider looking back on the painful events, and in retrospect think if that was funny or not. People love to be shown the peculiarity of their lives and how someone looking in on them could find it funny. Why is it that most everyone laughs when someone drops a tray in the cafeteria line? Or, why is it that people laugh when someone falls down a flight of stairs? This type of humor commonly known as "slap-stick" plays off of pain and embarrassment. This type of humor is more popular with children and teenagers, although an adult can catch himself laughing sometimes at someone falling down.
