The Australian Government is a constitutional democracy. Based upon the British Westminster system, it stresses the importance of two key concepts, representation and responsibility. Members of Parliament are expected to represent the interests of their electorate and are held responsible to them. But since the evolution of the modern party system whereby most MPs' affiliate themselves with a party, the original political process has been compromised. Here we examine two of such parties, the Liberals and the Australian Greens. The Liberal Party asserts a claim to represent the interests of the individual, families andfree enterprise. The Liberal Party has an exemplary record of providing a reformative policy framework and delivering programs targeting mainstream Australians. On the 10th of December 1949, the first Liberal Government was elected to Australia's national parliament. Since then, the Liberal Party has enjoyed political success unrivalled in our country's history and has been in government for 35 years in the last half century. Since first coming to government, the Liberals are credited with achievements in many sectors which have benefited all Australians.

The Greens support the use of material resources must be in accordance with the Earth's capacity to supply them and to assimilate wastes arising from their use and recognizes this is fundamental for the equity within and between generations. Sydney, Australia . They were rapidly evolving a structure for governing themselves, with both local groups and state meetings, formal membership of the party, members involved in policy development and a regular newsletter, the Green Left. The meeting was called by the then Leader of the Opposition, Robert Menzies. However, as experience has often demonstrated, although the presence of the political party system may have some detrimental consequences, the benefits they bring to society and the political process generally outweigh them.
