Her spiky jet black hair was splotched with chunky green streaks. Her black lipstick and wild purple eyeliner contrasted sharply with her ghastly white skin. She had three piercings on her face, and her ears were completely covered in metal hoops. The words “anti-social“ were printed across her black shirt. Rachel was the type of girl that most people would be afraid to even make eye contact with, she also happened to be my roommate.

I had been studying abroad for the summer in Italy, and on the day that I was supposed to return home to the States, my flight was cancelled. Much to my dismay, I was forced to spend the night in Milan and take the earliest flight the following day. Because Rachel was on the same flight as I, she was forced to spend the night as well. After all, underneath all the clothes and make up, Rachel and I were just two teenage girls having a bad day in the airport together. I simply wanted to be at home in my own bed, not in some random airport hotel with a girl who made Marilyn Manson look tame. Even though I hoped she would say no, she accepted my invitation, and we walked down to the lobby together.

The next morning we both woke up bright and early to catch out flights. This caught my attention, and we soon discovered that we both have a common Italian background.
