To Kill A Mockingbird

In this world, it is not unusual for people to conform to what is "right" in society. Some of those people who don't conform, such as Atticus Finch and Harrison Bergeron, are looked down at in their community because of their uniqueness. In the novel " To Kill A Mockingbird," by Harper Lee, and the short story " Harrison Bergeron," by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., conflict is caused because of the efforts of nonconformists.

Within the novel " To Kill A Mockingbird," more than one conflict is created. In a town full of bigotry and racism, and in a time period of extreme economic turbulence, white lawyer Atticus Finch finds himself defending a black man, Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white girl, making his case extremely difficult to win. Maycomb County is like a classic 1930 Alabama town, racist. Atticus is approached with an immense amount of criticism, including neighbors accusing him of being," No better than the niggers and trash he works for." Atticus refuses to conform to the popular theory against blacks, and stays strong throughout the case. Ha

When being forced to act like a lady by Aunt Alexandra, Scout attempts, but then goes back to what she wants to be. "To Kill A Mockingbird," is a novel where total equality was hoped for, but could never be reached, in a courtroom, or in everyday life. "Harrison Bergeron," is a story about a life of total equality, where freedom is searched for, and uniqueness is something unheard of. Scout is strong though, and she goes by unaffected. Accounting to Scout's age, it is ironic that she didn't conform to be against her father and what he was doing. Atticus disguises all of this criticism that he is receiving, and lets it further propel his personal goal to try to find equality. The pressures of the world push for you to conform to the usual person, but if you are strong enough, you will keep your beliefs and take the road less traveled. Harrison himself is the perfect nonconformist free-thinking individual in a world of total equality. After a peer, Cecil Jacobs, calls her father a, "nigger-lover," and announces that, " Scout Finches daddy defends Niggers," Scout gets ready to knock him out. When Atticus is almost killed by the lynch mob, Scout runs in and stands by her father, along with Jem and Dill. In this hypothetical world, equality has been taken too far, to the point where a Handicapper General controls everyone's talents and qualities.

The two works of art both want the same thing, but in different ways. At first Jem tried to get Dill and Scout to go home with him, but Scout refused. Children generally mimic and follow others at young ages, letting that shape their future.
