The Edge Of Heaven
The Edge Of Heaven by Marita Golden is a fiction novel that takes place in the late 1980's/ early 1990's in the nation's capital Washington D.C. Though the year is inconclusive it is proven by the style of dress mentioned in the early chapters of the novel. The story is told from two perspectives, first person, Teresa who is the main character, and third person narrative Lena who is the mother of Teresa. Teresa is portrayed as a troubled youth who had to face the issue of her mother's imprisonment for the death of her younger sister, Kenya. Throughout the novel a maturation process takes place with Teresa. She is becoming a woman and dealing with her fear of forgiving her mother for the death of her sister. Ma'Adele is Lena's mother and Teresa's grandmother, and in my eyes she is the strongest character in the novel. Ma'Adele fit the description of most grandmothers in African-American families. Ma'Adele seems flawless; she was a beautiful woman, Teresa states in
In comparison, Ma'Adele is in many ways like my own great-grandmother, Kitty Mom. This also refers to "Mom" when couples in the family had there differences she would always take the children to her house and it seemed like a safe haven for that short period of time. Mary Wessels, which is formal, names my great-grandmother, but to those who were close to her knew her as "Mom". " (163) Ma'Adele is cooking at the time when Simon, Lena old flame, had come over to see Lena. This paints a vivid picture of my great-grandmother. Even though was Ma'Adele was a fictitious she related to me in non-fictional way. Marita Golden uses Ma'Adele to show the other side of African-Americas. My only regret is that her role as a caregiver, mother, and provider was not given more attention; because of a lot these great women go without ever receiving a reward for their efforts. It all starts at the foundation with the elders. Teresa resented Lena for this because; he is not her father. This is not uncommon thing in many households. "Ma'Adele was in the kitchen, inspecting an array of vegetables she brought in for her garden.
