Incident At Vichy
Production History: First performed on December 3, 1964 at the ANTA-Washington Square Theatre, New York City. The play was staged later by Harold Clurman at the Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.Setting: The play is set in World War II Vichy France, 1942. More specifically the entire play takes place in 'A place of detention.' The scenography requirements for this production consist of a long bench facing an open area slightly cluttered in a warehouse-like fashion, a door leading off of the stage, a corridor leading off of the stage, a backdrop depicting a grimy windowed wall, and two boxes on either end of the bench.Characters: There are 21 characters in all. Nine of these characters could be considered main roles. Of these characters seven are prisoners awaiting their turns for an interview and two are responsible for the smooth progression of the interviews.Lebeau: Lebeau is a 25 year old, half-starved, unkempt painter who left his house out of restlessness after a week of solitude only to be picked up by Professor Hoffman and brought to the detentions area. Of the prisoners Lebeau is the
By the end of that conversation Von Berg come to something of an epiphany and it is clear that in the duration of the play, Von Berg had learned the most of all the characters about himself and the world. Von Berg: Von Berg is an Austrian prince with a great love for the arts. Plot Synopsis: The basic plot of this play is extremely simple. Thirteen men who have been snatched from the streets on the basis of their accents and appearances helplessly await their destiny in a dirty room of detention. Professor Hoffman: Professor Hoffman is the brains behind the operation, he is a Professor of anthropology. All those found to be Jewish were shipped off except for Leduc. He is disgusted by what the Germans do but comes to realize that all is not always what it seems. This is best shown in the case of Von Berg when he discovers Leduc's feelings towards him and finds the justification for those feelings in the form of Von Berg's apathy towards his brother. It is his opinion that their mutual problem can be easily resolved by presenting a confident image of oneself through good acting. Ironically, the very people who are presently being victimized by prejudice accuse the gypsy without warrant of having stolen an item in his possession. Leduc is an intelligent person and has a reasonably high standard in judging the morals of other people. This is another example of the appearance versus reality theme that seems to be woven through the entirety of this work.
