             Jack London, was born in San Francisco, California, on Jan
             uary 12, 1876, the illegitatmat son of Flora Wellman and William Henry Chaney, a traveling astrologer. Known as John Griffith Chaney, Jack London, took his name after John London, his step-father. His career life consisted of more odd jobs than a good steady career. His career began as a young boy having to support his mother and the other eleven children. Jack's poverty-stricken childhood early taught him that one must fight to survive.
             Odd jobs on paper routes, ice wagons, bowling alleys, in canneries, and jute mills, at ten cents a hour gave Jack London, the intimate sympathy with the working-class life and a permanent distaste for its drudgery. Since he had no regular childhood care or love, London, discovered books. He quit school at fourteen and became a "bookworm" to adventurous books, sea voyages, and discoveries.
             At the age of eighteen, he joined the branch of Kelly Coxey's Army of the Commonwealth and started beating his way east on freight trains. Traveling over the whole United States, Jack London, was arrested for vagrancy. After being arrested, London claimed it to be the turning point of his life.
