             "Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs; Being purged, a fire sparkling in lover's eyes;" (Shakespeare, I. i., 193-194). Through the different works of William Shakespeare, it is evident that the power of love changes as quick as time and it can be altered by other powerful emotions. Emily Bronte illustrates the transformation of passionate love into hatred in the world of Wuthering Heights. In the novel, characters such as Heathcliff, Catherine, Edgar, and Isabella experience love and its ultimate downfall. Catherine's obsession over her undying love for Heathcliff fluctuates into hatred because of her fear in degrading herself by marrying a man of lower class. On the contrary, Heathcliff's love for Catherine is overcome with jealousy when he is inform of Catherine's marriage to Edgar. So, Heathcliff preys on Isabella's ignorance towards his false love for her. Therefore, through obsession, jealousy, and ignorance, passionate love is consumed by the darkness of hatred.
             Growing up together in the same household, Catherine and Heathcliff develop feelings for each other at a young age. Heathcliff accepted Catherine with her many flaws and loves her unconditionally. Catherine also loves Heathcliff with all her heart but because of their differences in social classes, she never acts upon her feelings. She could not bare the thought of marrying someone who could not offer her the same luxuries she is accustomed to. As time progress, Catherine met Edgar Linton, a man of the same class as herself. Hence, her obsession towards Heathcliff contradicts with Edgar and his fortunes. During their relationship, Edgar asks Catherine's hand in marriage and she quickly agrees without any consideration towards Heathcliff.
