Many bands have become true leaders in their time. In November of 1999, the Beastie Boys came out with a compilation of some of their best music. All the songs ranged from music out of their punk rock days to when they owned a major recording company to the present. The Beastie Boys are influential and cutting edge "scientists of sound" in every aspect, proving so in their unique beats, music, lyrics, and actions.
The Beastie Boys' music has always been presented to such an array of audiences and in different styles, allowing them to touch on certain issues not mentioned as often in the music business. "'What makes us significant is that we're a white rap group, and we're performing for this audience that's never seen people like us'-Mike D, 1987" ( Heatley, pg. 45). Their presentation of topic has been the thing that has sold so many records for them. In 1987, when their album Licensed to Ill came out, they were these demoral, rapping, cussing, drinking white kids tearing up the music scene. Many people disliked the Beastie Boys raging at
. . .
But it's actually a privilege to be able to change and to be making records that reflect that change. And as long as they talked about white boys and beer and stuff like that, who could knock their topics?' Chuck D (member, Public Enemy )" ( Light, Spin. Her daughter dropped out of high school because of us; it made me feel really bad' - Mike D" ( Heatley, pg. Check Your Head and Ill Communication were very different sounding than their first albums. A lot of their music now speaks of religion and women's rights rather than getting drunk and womanizing. "' This woman called up my mother this week. As long as they sounded good and were selling records, the Beasties were turning heads. The Beastie Boys couldn't always predict crowd reaction, like when they wrote "Fight For Your Right", they were actually making fun of the "smokin' out", tough guy attitude. Also their music reflects the maturing process they've gone through in their music. Also it shows how diverse the Beastie Boys really are, because they could be talking about a whole different style of music, while applying to the same clan of white guys. This has transformed them, letting them become some of the most elite music-makers of true puissance in their time.
Finally, since the Beastie Boys have changed music, lyrics, morals and attitudes they have still remained popular.
