Australia's involvement in the vietnam war
AUSTRALIA'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE VIETNAM WARIn the 1960's Australia became involved in another war, this time in Vietnam. The war started because the communists who controlled North Vietnam wanted to control all of the country. The problem with this was that South Vietnam was controlled by a government that was friendly to America, a democratic country. There were only a few good reasons why Australia was involved in the Vietnam War. They were that Australia wanted to have a good friendship with America and stay close allies with them for incase a war broke out in Australia we would need all the help we could get and the forward defense policy. To stop the North Vietnamese, America sent troops to fight in Vietnam, the problem quickly developed into a full-scale war. On one side were the South Vietnamese, supported by America and its allies. On the other side was the North Vietnamese Army, which was supported with arms and equipment by the Soviet Union, and China, two powerful communist countries. Also fighting for the North were the Viet Cong. In late 1964 the Australian Government sent Australian troops to the war in Vietnam. This decision was supposedly based on three main reasons: The first was that the Sout
As was once said by the United States Commander, General Westmoreland to the Australian troops after the Vietnam War: "I have never seen a finer group of men. We now know that this was not true. He said Australia would go "all the way with LBJ" (Lyndon Baines Johnson, President of the United States)As the world was in a thrust for land counties were invading other countries for there's. This was done due to the lack of numbers signing up to the War after reading and hearing of all the deaths. This suited Menzie's policy of allying with "great and powerful friends". The domino affect made some people realize that it was brutal and un-justifying to send Australia to war. If these were the numbers of your birthday you would have to go to the conscription office and run the tests to see if you were eligible to go to war. Australia's military was not huge at this time compared to a lot of other countries. Australia needed "great and powerful friends". It was also believed that it is "sweet and honorable to die for your country"In the 1950's, Sir Robert Menzie's introduced the forward defense policy which is to send troops out to fight and defend their country in another land. Though without these deaths Australia could not be free and maybe have turned communist. In July 1962 Australia sent in 30 military advisers to Vietnam and this number was increased to 60 military advisers by June 1964. Australia saw the Vietnam War an opportunity to build up their "credit of good will" with America by sending in troops to South Vietnam. The lotto was a ball was dropped down the funnel and would show the numbers of a year, month and day.
