The film Immortal Beloved was amazing. It was something very entertaining yet educational at the same time. I’ve always known about Beethoven. From the time of my early childhood days I have been introduced to culture. Music is one aspect of culture that I was always exposed to. I remember going to music stores with my parents and buying stacks of classical compact discs. When I was a child though, I never really appreciated this type of music. I used to complain whenever my parents would play their cds. Having watched Immortal Beloved, I have a new appreciation for classical music especially that of Beethoven’s. The passion, feeling, glory, sadness, joy, triumph, regret that his music contains and conveys which once escaped me now hits me straight at my core.
I really and truly enjoyed Immortal Beloved a lot. As soon as I got home after watching this film, I raided my parents’ music cabinet. I had an inane desire to listen to Beethoven’s music after learning a bit more about his life. Listening to his music willingly for the first time in my life, I found myself touched. I think that knowing
. . .
It was slow enough for the filmmakers to be able to explore each aspect of Beethoven’s life and introduce it to us slowly. What I find admirable is that he recognized his gift and he wanted to share it with the world. Despite that huge and oftentimes insurmountable barrier, he was able to overcome it by sheer determination and talent and fulfill his potential in composing one of the greatest, if not the greatest, sonata of all time. This film has helped me to see the grandeur of his music and I’m glad to be able to have watched it. Though to us that sort of life and lifestyle may be unbelievable because we live in a modern world which is very different from the world that they lived in, you cant get any more realistic that a story that is actually based on reality. Music is used in the film but not as some sort of background sound. Yet, it was fast enough that you didn’t feel like falling asleep in the middle of the film. Just like traditional European cinema, music is used for a reason.
One reason that I felt engrossed while watching the film is something I find interesting in how the filmmakers were able to insert an element of mystery and suspense in the film (which is distinctly American) and still keep its European characteristics. I’m not trying to glorify Beethoven.
One other characteristic of European cinema that was upheld in this film is its being close to reality.
I believe that the film holds both American and European characteristics. A genius like Beethoven deserved nothing less and the filmmakers did rise to the occasion of his life and was able to produce a movie worthy of his life.
