In "The Intimate Machine," Neil Frude introduces the idea of using a computer as a companion instead of a tool. Throughout the story, he explains that the computer makers need to begin building computers that are "softened" and "humanized." Frude believes that by giving the computer "a personality of its own," it will be able to fulfill some of our human wants and needs.
             The first part of the discussion, Frude assumes that "humanized" machines will become apparent in the near future by means of dolls, humanoid machines, and computer-based interaction systems. We already have teddy bears making sounds that are soothing to a baby and have machines that are visually exciting to children. As the future becomes present, we may even be able to see robots that are almost identical to our domestic animals. Once we are capable of building robots that look like our domestic animals, we will be well on our way of creating the ideal machine.
             Frude believes the ideal machine will be able to look, feel, and sound friendly but will also be able to interact with in a friendly manner. This machine would be able to show emotions such as crying and laughing. These emotions will help "soften" the feel of the machine. By programming machines to have emotions, we could be able to personalize these machines to fit a certain individuals taste.
             After the machines are fitted to match our individual tastes, Frude believes that the machines could become flexible and adaptable. Thus creating a machine that would be able to understand and use our different figure of speeches. With the ability to adapt, the machine would be able change its way of thinking and perception of the world. It would almost have the human ability to adjust in different social situations. With this human ability to adjust, the machine will almost be identical to a human being.
