Fried Green Tomatoes
In "Fried Green Tomatoes" a woman named Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) is going through a mid-life crisis. She gains strength through a story told by Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy). The story takes place in a small town in Alabama called Whistle Stop. The story is filled with good drama, comic relief, murder, cannibalism, and a star studded cast of award winning actresses such as Jessica Tanndy, Kathy Bates, and Cicely Tyson. The book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1987 and the film was nominated for a few awards itself. The setting of this story plays an important role in the characters, and their roles in society. The time frame is around the 1990's and flashbacks to the 1930's. In the nineties, there was a strong movement of women and their strength. This is well played out by the over weight, ignored Evelyn Couch. In the thirties, there was a strong use of slavery, especially being in the Deep South. In both timeframes, the women in these stories stand-up and say enough is enough. Evelyn stands up to Ed Couch, and Idggy stands up
for Big George in the courts, and stands to Frank Bennett. In this scene, Idggy tells Ruth the story of the lake that froze up and flew away, as told by Buddy just before his death. This was a very moving moment, and the director's favorite scene. Sipsey makes a great quote about the character of Ruth, "Ms. The most interesting thing is, how much different each character was, but they all seemed to fit together perfectly. The use of flashbacks really helped bring you into the story of Ed and Evelyn's relationship, and Evelyn's journey for strength. That story appeared in the first and last encounter between Idggy and Ruth. In the scene of Ruth's death, the lighting plays a key role. This is really a good tear jerking scene, and the camera angle used from inside the car showing this really helps add to the sadness. And it is this scene where the movie keeps you guessing if Mrs. The position of the bed in the corner and the rays of light coming in on Ruth's face, giving her a very pale look, but leaving her room in a dark and dismal state, and really give us the sense of death. " In the final scene, Ninny leaves the nursing home and goes back to Whistle Stop.
