He finished his training, as artillery man and officer; he joined the French army when he was 16 years old. Soon after that his father died and he was left with the responsibility of taking care of his family. The French monarchy was overthrown on August 10, 1792, Napoleon decided to make his move up in ranks. After this, Napoleon started becoming a recognized officer.
In 1793 he was made a captain in the army and in the same year he commanded the artillery that forced British to withdraw from the Mediterranean port of Toulon. He later was made a brigadier general.

Napoleon was welcomed by the people of the conquered lands because they believed he was overthrowing the old oppressive rulers and bringing the new freedoms of the French Revolution. The British fought to prevent him from doing either. Austria, Russia and Prussia sent huge armies against him.
He continued to fight the British for overseas colonies. The Russian armies were smaller and much weaker, and without much trouble Napoleon captured the Russian capital, Moscow. As winter approached, Napoleon's army found itself without food or fuel enough to withstand the extreme cold of the Russian winter. The British remained Napoleon's undefeated enemy.
In 1815 he made an attempt to return to power, but the British and Prussians beat him at the Battle of Waterloo where he was finally defeated, this ending the Nepoleonic Wars. The Peninsular War did not bring victory to either side for years, but finally it helped to defeat Napoleon. This was the end of Napoleon's dream. em to fire "a whiff of grapeshot" into the crowd.
