Compare Italian and South Asian migration to Australia in the second half of the twentieth century.Migrants in Australia have had a lot to do with how this country is shaped, from the very beginning when white settlers first arrived on our shores. In comparison with the rest of the world, in particular Europe, Australia is a very new country and due to its isolation, may have had problems attracting people to the shores here. In an order to boost population Australia has had a high number of immigrants that have over the years contributed greatly to the nation. In particular there are a large number of migrants that have come from Italy and also the area known as South Asia, which encompasses India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh also known as the sub-continent. However the paths that these groups of migrants have taken to reach Australia is very different. This essay will attempt to compare the differences in the two migratory groups by showing the different reasons why migrants have come to Australia. Before 1945, the greatest concentration of Italians in Australia were living in Queensland and working off the land, where about one-third of Italian migrants had settled. However, by the time of increased migration by those from South Asia, the removal of racial clauses in Australia's immigration policies has made it easier for these South Asian peoples to migrate to Australia. In a number of ways this restricted settlement of Southern Italians in Australia. In particular, labour shortages were required in the mining, timber, steel, building and textile industries (Collins 1988 p21). Still, it was the Northern Italians who were offered the opportunity to come to Australia before the Southern Italians, because it was thought that they would assimilate into Australian society and culture with much more ease (Study Guide p58). There have been a number of explanations of the motivations behind the post-war immigration program, and the need for low-skilled workers to fill such positions. However the introduction of cane-cutting machines in the 1960's greatly reduced the need for rural labour and the migrant workers had to adapt accordingly. However fraud, exorbitant tax levies and fear of devine punishment thwarted the egalitarian movement. In 1959, there were 1,040 people who migrated from India. However Northern Italians, were seen as desirable migrants in comparison to their southern counterparts, and their migration to Australia was a much easier process, which had much to do with Australian immigration policy as anything else. In the same year, there were 25,844 long-term and permanent arrivals from the shores of Italy (ABS 1998-99). The majority of Italians that have settled in Australia, came from the southern parts of Italy; Sicily, Calabria, Campania and the Abruzzi (Study Guide p57). There is a long history of Italian migration to Australia, during the gold-rush era in particular, however the majority of Italian migration came after World War II, when Australia introduced a mass immigration policy. This economic growth ensured that there were positions available for low-skilled workers in a number of different manufacturing and labour markets.
