Urbanization

1. Urbanization is thought to of started in Bangladesh over two thousand years ago back then they were concerned with setting up administration, trade, commerce, and certain religious celebrations. Urban centers were set up in hope to defend the country but most of them ended up coming under British command so growth at this time was very slow and limited. Most urban centers were where there was easy access to transport meaning the were usually on a river for trading with other urban areas. When India and Pakistan gain there independence in 1947 major investments in the city of Dhaka and Chittachong occurred they were old British headquarters and were all industrial areas. So this caused West Pakistan to dominate the government and Bangladesh was left with problems as the country experienced a huge increase in urban population just before its independence in 1971. This happened due to Muslims that migrated and decided to settle in urban areas. In this time there was also a rise in rural population witch helped in the process of urban growth

3. The main reasons for people moving to Dhaka city is if there unemployed, landless and just basically poverty stricken they may be able to improve there lifestyl

. . .

A policy is very important for the future of manila die to the increase of people moving to the city regions of the country if a policy isn’t created the city will overcrowd and a lot of problems will arise costing more money. Also with slum dwellers coming into the city makes it a large city with a poor population and this in turn will effect everyone another problem is pollution this is a big problem in Dhaka as since the city is overpopulated there is obviously huge amounts of car pollution been pumped into the air everyday and when that’s added to the industrial wastes it’s a large amount of pollution But also the cities general population contributes heavily to the pollution because of there living conditions this pollution comes from open dustbins and sometimes household wastes will be dumped by the side of the road and the lack of waste disposal facilities and the lack of concise about what the pollution could be doing to the population is a big issue another problem is Dhaka’s floating population a floating population is migrants that select pedestrian spaces or back alleys and stay there until they are forced to move in 1991 there floating population was 5252500 people which is 0.

One issue will be pollution the way to overcrowding of the city this issue could be overcome by promoting the advantages of smaller families and possibly offer special benefits for people with only 1 or 2 children so the city doesn’t get overpopulated also to prevent overcrowding smaller towns should be made around with city with much improved transport links to stop people living in slums around the cities and also to attract trade between other cities

Also the government should set out more formal jobs instead of people undergoing informal activities so the workers will play taxes which could be used to fund health care education and to build better roads and improve transport links

Planning has been an issue for some cities so the government to city council should constantly looking over the plan to help improve the city and also sewerage should be put in to increase sanitary and to decrease pollution also if money starts getting put into the city the government should consider changing the factories so they pump out less greenhouse gasses

So basically the city should seek funding so it can put money back into the city this can be done by Strengthening of Master Plan road facilities including ring, arterial, bypass/link roads and small bridges, Sites and services, Development of bus/truck terminals, Construction/up gradation of Master Plan drains including Storm water channels, Solid waste management, Development of market complexes/shopping centers, Provision of tourist facilities, Development of City/Town Parks,

Street lighting for Master Plan roads, Major public amenities like Gardens, Playgrounds, Marriage halls, pay-and-use toilets, etc. Another problem is informal economic activities this refers to the people that earn money but it’s nor recorded officially so they don’t have to pay taxes most of the people that work in informal activities would be to provide basic needs like food clothing shelter and transport. Also air links have been established to create extra trade. The government tried to slow down the rural urban drift by helping setting up small towns which migrants or people wanting to move would come to attempt to stop all the people from flocking into the 1 city and in time these small towns would grow and become cities themselves

5. There are many urban problems in Bangladesh one been urban congestion. The other mail reason would be by environmental causes like a river eroding and it starting to flood the village this would cause people to move to Dhaka city

4. The government is attempting to solve these problems by encouraging the continued growth of small towns to help redistribute the extremely large amount of rural laborers who usually like to migrate the city also the government attempts to fix these problems by building more roads to increase transport facilities so people can get to work into eh city. Also accessibility to technology has increased so people don’t usually move to the city for this reason

7. Cycle/Rickshaw stands, Traffic improvement and management schemes, Construction of retaining walls and slope stability measures in hill station towns, Social amenities, especially for the poorer sections. Urban congestion is a big problem in Bangladesh and more precisely the city of Dhaka this is due to the city plan has not been looked at in detail for quite some time. Urban congestion is basically overcrowding and an imbalance between the ration of urban functions and the population served also contribute to the problem.
