Southern Speak

Perhaps it is precocious of me to say it, but I believe a great many southerners speak as if they are uneducated. My husband and his family are among those many. His mother speaks so poorly that rednecks refer to her as a hillbilly. I do not know the difference and perhaps it is because I am a northerner and have never been exposed to it very little. I have never cut off the lights, I am never fixin to do something, and I have no idea where yonder is.Before we moved to Rocky Mount, my husband and I lived in Goldsboro, where most his immediate family was less than a mile away. My mother-in-law, Brenda, who does not drive, would call me and ask me to carry her over yonder quite often. These trips were always stressful and she would give me directions by landmarks, even though she knew that I had no idea where these landmarks were loc

Marvin was the Market Manager at Winn-Dixie and he is one of the sweetest men I have ever met, well, once I could understand what he was saying. How could such intelligent people use such language? Not that long ago, I caught myself saying big ol? as in big ol? bruise. He had been sick for about a week when I saw him last, and he asked me what he could do because he was ?sick wit da die ree. ? When we first moved in together, Brenda would come over, seemingly every time while I was fixing a meal and ask me ?Whatcha cookin good?? What does that mean? Why does she need to add good to that statement? If she cannot reach us, Brenda will leave messages on our answering machine saying that it is a mergent. ated, and these landmarks were no longer what they were, thus confusing me more so. I cannot seem to convince him that the me is not necessary. My husband and his family are not the only people that I know whom cannot speak proper English. ? We have discussed this many times. He brought home some paperwork on the upcoming sales the other day and I read it, as I usually do. There was a message from the Regional Manager in which he wrote ?if you seen what I seen last weekend?? I laughed aloud. ?My husband is the Co-Store Manager at Winn-Dixie. The one thing that bothers me most is that all my college instructors use the word (or is it words) y?all, among other southern slang words.
