Television Violence and Children

             Throughout recent history there has been a constant battle between the media and the rest of America. The masses are disgusted with the sex, drugs, and the most important issue, violence, that are contained in today's mass media. Violence is present in almost every aspect of the media. It flashes across the big screen day after day. It infects millions of everyday programs. "80% of all television programs contain violent acts"(Lamson 26). Video games are full of it. As time passes the problem grows worse. If one were to take a step back and look at the high violence content and statistics from recent studies, he/she wood easily be able to see the connection between violence in the media and the problems in today's society. Violence in the media creates violence in society.
             The media claims their innocence in the cause of violence. Movie producers and news companies state, "We don't cause violence in the world we just reflect it." However, America is not blind and can see the violence-drenched media is all but innocent. Hollywood, as the media is often referred to, has been faced with many million-dollar lawsuits. So far Hollywood has come out on top, but studies show that those fighting for the media should have lost and paid up. "In 1973, when a town in...Canada was wired for television signals, University of British Columbia researchers observed first- and second-graders. Within two years, the incidence of hitting, biting, and shoving increased 160 percent in those classes" (Cannon 18-19). This shows that TV most definitely influences children to act out in violent ways.
             Many children watch hours upon hours of television each day. Parents often think it is all right to let them watch cartoons and other children's programs.
