Cold Mountain
Written from a third person, perspective point of view, Cold Mountain is a novel that depicts the themes of self-determination, undying love, generosity, and self-reliance, several themes that are found in society. Author Charles Frazier creates the characters of Ada and Inman to take on a quest of self-discovery as they live through the aftermath of the Civil War and try hopelessly to move on and hopefully find their way back to a love they had in the past. Frazier begins the novel by introducing Inman, who is wounded and goes AWOL from a military hospital to begin a journey back to his love Ada. Soon thereafter, Ada is introduced, an attractive, educated girl, she is left alone when her father dies and must learn how to cope with her feelings and become self-reliant and move on with her life. The novel is the story of Inman's journey back to Ada, and the many encounters she and he witness along the way. The various people and circumstances that Inman and Ada encounter in their journey procreate several emotional responses that contribute to the several themes of the book. In the beginning of the story, Ada recollects the time when her father was ill with tuberculosis and dies,
That night, Ada and Inman eat dinner, make love, and plan their futures together, giving the novel a happy ending. The forest he travels through has obviously been littered with battles of war and is now home to peasants, beggars, gypsies, and infested with enemy soldiers known as the Home Guard. Inman confronts a number of different individuals amid his return to Ada, however one distinct occurrence with a woman named Sara results in violence. Ada was fortunate enough to learn how to read, write, and play piano, however she was never instructed how to be independent and run her family's farm. This conjoins with the theme of generosity, Inman is grateful for Sara's help and feels he must avenge her violation by punishing the Federal soldiers for their wrongdoing. Due to Ruby's early abandoning, she was not offered the luxuries of learning how to read and write. Unfortunately, Inman is killed in a skirmish with enemy soldiers, but Ada and Ruby continue happily with their lives. If I was forced to move into the world by myself right now, I feel that I would be capable of continuing with my life and live it to its fullest. Sara has fed, housed, and clothed Inman for the night. The riders are really Federal soldiers, after they finish with Sara Inman ambushes them, killing them all. However, her many years of struggling molded her into a very self-sufficient woman. On my journey to becoming I have and will have to meet with several different types of people: Blue and Gold officers, Marine Officers, Naval Officers, the board of applications at the Unites States Naval Academy, and my local congressmen. Eventually, with some help from a woman named Ruby, Ada slowly begins to make reparations on the farm and continue on with her life. This is very similar to how Inman met with a variety of people on his journey. Although the novel is a very long read, I believe that the themes and messages that are delivered can relate to anyone's struggles in life, I know several of the themes related to my own life.
