Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies is a novel by William Golding, set in World War 2, where a plane filled with English schoolboys crash-lands on a deserted tropical island. The boys remain on the island for a lengthy period and during that time, they are responsible for themselves. Instead of behaving in a civilized and mature manner, the boys eventually become amoral savages and lose all sense of rules and limits. In the early parts of the story, the group of English schoolboys act in a very sophisticated manner and they are very practical in the initial stages of the story. They successfully manage themselves and they vote for an official leader for the group as is done in a proper election. They also make a signal fire to attract the attention of any bypassing planes or ships. Jack is the leader of a group of choirboys and they are given the task of hunting and finding food. It is this hunting that originally leads the boys into becoming full-fledged savages. The choir boys' obsession with hunting leads them astray and they abandon their task of managing the fire and thus the fire goes out, jeopardizing the group's chances of being rescued.Although initially the boys do behave very decently, the very first point where they start becomin

By Sanchi Turki, Grade 9 at Normanhurst Boys High School, Sydney, Australia. This is actually how people behave without having guidelines set for them which make them civilized. People also become savages when their only goal in life is gratifying their senses as Jack was doing by killing animals. The boys required the presence of adults to set guidelines for them and as a result of adults' absence the boys rapidly became amoral savages and were even driven to the extent of killing each other. The cause of the boys turning into savages is because savagery is the raw survival instinct of people when they are not applying their knowledge or being set rules and limitations. Other causes for savagery were the boys' fear of the beast- which was actually their own fear and the rivalry for leadership which flares up so much that Jack is driven to kill Ralph. This is why Jack does not feel any remorse about stealing and damaging Piggy's glasses. All of these factors contribute to making these civilized English schoolboys descend into amoral howling savages. Jack does not realize that Ralph's group also requires the glasses to light a signal fire which should be the task given most priority since the boys cannot be rescued any other way. They eat in a vicious and bloodthirsty manner and they literally eat like pigs. This contributes to the savage and mad behaviour of the boys since it makes them feel uneasy and they become more obsessed with killing animals. When Ralph and his group decide to make shelters, the others laze around and do not pay any attention to what Ralph is saying. At this stage of the story, Jack starts behaving like a savage because he does not understand that society has to live by rules and laws so that the world can operate in a civilized manner. Ralph tries to discipline the group by making the rule of holding the conch during a meeting, to prevent everyone making noise and behaving in a disorderly manner.
