The censor: motives and tactics

             In a article from the Intellectual Freedom Manual 2002, the question is asked, "why censor"? The response is "all censors share one belief; that they can recognize evil and that other people must be protected from it".# This article explains the four basic motives for the censors actions, how to challenge a book, and get it banned.
             The four basic motivational factor in censoring a book, is Family Values, Religion, Political Views, and Minority Rights. The article explains that in some cases the censor feels threatened by the changes in the "traditional" life. The censor may feel that the work is too sexually explicit, and wants to protect his child. The censor may challenge a book if it upsets the ideal family way of life.
             When the religion aspect comes into the picture, the censor views explicit sexual works, attacks on religious faith. Some censors feel that sexual or political based books are damaging to religion. Of course books with any different "faiths" other than their own will also be challenged.
             Political views can be as threatening to a censor as religious views can be. The censor may view a work that "advocates radical changes as subversive."# The censor doesn't feel a library or school should have books with the words "communist,"un-American", or "ungodly" along with many more words he considers to be politically incorrect. It is not difficult to formulate an attack on the grounds of obscenity, and political grounds.
             Of course censor have a field day out of minority rights. The conservative censor wants their group to be recognized. Women and ethnic groups do not want to be stereotyped, and are ready to reject any work that does that.
