The Glass Menagerie, a play written by Tennessee Williams, written in the early twentieth century. Living life in the "Industrial Era," as called by historians, Amanda lives with her crippled daughter, Laura, and her working son Tom in an apartment in St. Louis. Amanda tells Laura to stay "nice and pretty for her gentlemen callers" even though Laura isn't expecting any. Amanda tells a story of when she had seventeen gentlemen callers on one Sunday afternoon. A few days passes when Amanda comes home after finding out that Laura dropped out of school a few months ago. Laura then refuses to go to school and spends all of her time playing with her glass menagerie and listens to her old records. Amanda decides that a gentleman caller for Laura would help her. Laura tells Amanda that she has only liked one boy, in high school, named Jim. When Tom goes out to the movies Amanda accuses him of doing other things in the argument Tom creates a wild story of him being a hired assassin and how he is a lord of the criminal world. When Tom apologizes, Amanda asks Tom to bring someone home for Laura. Later Tom tells Amanda that he invited Jim O'Connor over for dinner.
             With Amanda's delusional mind she immediately plans an embellished dinner for Jim. Amanda refines what Laura plans on wearing and adds some "Gay deceivers" to make Laura look more exquisite to a potential gentleman caller. When Amanda talks about Jim who is coming to dinner, Laura tells her mother that she might not be able to come to dinner because it could be the same Jim she liked in high school. After Amanda forced Laura to open the door for Jim she sees that it is the same Jim from high school. At dinner Laura gets sick and has to be excused.
