However little known the feelings or views of such a boy may be on his first entering a junior high, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding students, the he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their peers.
“Buffy darling,” said her friend, Vicki, to her early one Monday morning, “have you heard that someone purchased the house next door to me?”
Buffy said that she had heard about it and asked whether there were any children moving in as well.
“Of course, why would I care if there were none.” Shrieked Vicki; “there is the most adorable boy our age. After school today you should come home with me and we can find out more about him.”
After a long and monotonous academic day filled with mounting hopes as to the character and availability of the new arrival, the two girls went to Vicki’s house in the most affluent suburb of Riverdale. Soon Brad made the acquaintance of the whole grade and was well liked all around.
Brad learned of the girl next door through his older sister who had seen Vicki get off the bus that afternoon, and was now looking forward to having someone from his class so close to his home, especially when that person was allegedly an attractive, popular girl. Brad, being the admirableperson that he was, had heard enough. The excitement the girls felt at hearing this could not have been greater had they been given thousand dollar-shopping sprees at Abercrombie. Buffy and Vicki were the only people in school that Brad openly disliked and they now spend their weekends at the mall together in all their bitterness. When his family was invited to The Dalauny’s home for dinner that night, being that they had not yet unpacked any cooking utensils, the Smiths accepted the invitation and Brad was disappointed to learn that Vicki had gone to the mall and was then spending the night with a friend. He interrupted the girls’ conversation to introduce them to his sister, Darla.
