Understanding Judith Viorst Poem titled “True Love”.

The poem “True Love” is an expression of the view of a housewife’s thoughts on what is the meaning of true love and how she recognized it in her marriage. It is told through her eyes as she tries to explain how she can identify this thing called true love. It’s important to point out that the speaker seems to have true love but yet not understand what it really is until she has fully explained its nature. The speaker must endure the thoughts of attraction, jealousy, compassion and comfort as she muddles through her life story explaining true love.

The speaker opens with the question at hand saying “It is true love because” (line 1). This statement is a question because it requires a responsive answer. She tries to use an every day routine of hers by attempting to make herself beautiful for t

. . .

Yet her overriding want to spend time with her man compels her to view them playing. This still falls short of what she wishes to express as true love (line 5-6). Yet, nether truly believe or respond in any hate as it is only a passing thing (lines 8- 24).

Now the speaker talks about doing things with her husband that she holds a philosophical opposition too. It’s with compassion, understanding, caring, jealousy, passion and compromise that love exists. This feeling is a expressed as jealousy that he might be with someone else or fear he may be dead. Another pause and then she adds the feeling she gets when her man is late to come home for the dinner she has prepared. Realizing that physical beauty is not enough to explain what true love is, she seems to pause by saying “And because” (line 4). Even the loss of physical beauty with age can not affect this feeling of love. She expresses her distaste to the Green Bay Packers. Death she explains would be a better chouse between the to concepts. This too seem not enough explanation of true love. The following day comes, he does not rub his statement in when she has a hangover.
