Core and peri-phery
Development is a direction that every country should follow. Development is rarely distributed evenly within country, therefore core and periphery regions appear. Core is usually capital city, with relatively educated people. These areas are characterised by rising population through in-migration with mainly young age structure. There infrastructure is well developed. Generally, it is the most prosperous part of country or state. On the other hand, periphery forms the poorest regions with high rate of unemployement. These areas suffer from geographical isolation, being distant from core spheres of activity, having poorer access to and from markets. Infrastructure is also limited. Core-periphery model represents Figure 1. Example of country where core and periphery areas appeared, can be United Kingdom (Figure 2). The south, especially London is the most developed region and is character
European Union is also invloved with promotion poorer regions in Europe. So, availibility of raw materials, people's education and skills and land relief are main factors that influenced location of core and periphery areas. Scotish and Island's small and middle bussines is supported by the Highlands and Islands Development Board (HIDB). Summing up, role of government in development of country is enormous. After some time, when well accessible coal got exhaused, mining techniques were improved, so that coal from lowet floors could be exploited. In rough areas (part of Scotland) there is much more difficult to build whole infrastructure, essential to transport. The main aim is to distribute most of money to regions which are the poorest. Basing on that, there were built available then infrastructure. Their main aim is to decrease unemployement in the poorest regions. It has to me marked that, unemployement in periphery is the greatest problem. It is much easier to construct roads, railways, water and gas lines on flat regions (Southern UK), so these areas developed more rapidly. Therefore, these regions suffer from isolation and lack of access to investments. Such businesses as Nokia in Ireland has grown just by their help.
