Two Lives of Charlemagne

During the time of Charlemagne, people viewed heroes as brave, noble, honest people and were highly looked up upon. People not only respected and adored heroes, but also attempted to become a hero. Heroes were well respected and admired. To have the title of hero or to be called a hero was an honor and prestige. It was the way a man could become noblest and best.

At the same time there were villains. These people shared some of the same characteristics as heroes. They were brave, noble, and admired by some. And it is these reasons why Charlemagne was viewed as a hero and not a villain. Sometimes they Saxons even said they would change to the Christian faith, even though they didn’t. Through the whole time Charlemagne acted as a noble, brave, and honest man. They only did this if Charlemagne did what they demanded, and he usually did.

It was all of these traits and more that made him viewed as a hero. It was the faithlessness of the Saxons that drew out the war and caused so much hatred on both sides. Charlemagne tried to end things without much incodent, although the Saxons prevented that. I say this because Charlemagne was so well respected by all. People saw him as a generous man, and thought highly of him. Villains were feared and looked down upon. Charlemagne made a strong kingdom stronger. The Saxons had been beaten up numerous times by Charlemagne’s strong army, and many times he simply just asked them to surrender. As son as he found that there were Christians living in poverty in other countries, he showed compassion for their wants, and even sent money to them. It wasn’t until the war with the Saxons, that you start to see how loyal men were to Charlemagne.
