Drugs in Sports

             While researching the subject "Drug usage in sports", I have been able to find a lot of information of drugs that are being used and the side affects that they can cause. Many of the drugs that are used to enhance an athlete's ability usually have harmful side affects along with them. The first article by Robert Sullivan, and Sara Song goes into detail about the Summer Olympics in Sydney, what drugs will be used by athletes and the tests that will be done to ban them from competing. The second article is an ESPN special section where the author is not identified. The article goes into detail about what kind of an athlete would use anabolic steroids and how they are taken. The second half of the article goes into detail about the different side affects that are present in men and women after taking steroids for a period of time.
             The first article by Robert Sullivan, and Sara Song is about illegal drugs that are being used in the Summer Olympics. The Summer Olympics committee has come up with new testing techniques to try to prevent more athletes in taking illegal drugs to enhance their abilities during the Olympics. In this article different drugs are named that are the most commonly used in athletic events to enhance their abilities. With each of the substances named they also explain how that drug is tested for and what percentages are considered illegal. Anabolic steroids are drugs that boost the testosterone in the body, which increases lean body mass, muscle strength and muscle definition. High testosterone levels that show up in urine samples detect them. An example of an illegal method of cheating is taking a growth hormone. The same people that use steroids take growth hormones. Growth hormones are exactly like steroids except that the can not be tested for in Olympic testing.
