The Cold War was in not really a war. There was no major fighting, but rather a conflict between the East and the West. After the Second World War, the world was divided between the Communists and the non-Communists, the East and the West. The East consisted of the Soviet Union, its smaller countries. The West consisted of the United States and its Western European Allies. Although no full-scale war broke out, it seemed like the East and West were on the edge of World War III. Both sides preserved their armed forces and developed large arsenals of nuclear weapons. World War II had a particularly heavy blow on the Soviet Union, and when it was all over, conflicting ideas of political and economic groups accumulated strength. As time went on after the end of the war, the gaps between the East and the West grew increasingly wider. This separation, and the tension that it created, led to the Cold War. At the end of World War II it was the United States who lead the world in atomic weapons technology. It was proposed that the atomic production eventually become international, however the Soviet Union was apprehensive and refused to accept the conditions for internationalization. The Cold War was in a way, a war against the spread of Communism. " This action by the United States was like a slap in the face to the Soviet Union, and the tension rose even higher. The formation of the Marshal Plan seemed to be aimed against the Soviet Union and more directly at stopping or limiting the spread of Communism. The Marshal Plan paved the way for the unification of western Germany, and the containment policy was enforced as a strategy for combating Communism. The Cold WarBen YoungJune 11, 2001. Although the United Nations soon demanded their withdrawal, and the Soviets had no choice but to back off. In some areas the Communists were still a part of a "government of unity," however they were eventually forced out of government in order to reorganize around the parties of the political center. During the war, the Allies had agreed to occupy Iran together. Throughout Europe, if there was any chance of the Communists gaining any political power, the United States and Britain seemed to do all they could to stop it. However the United States caused conflict as well. After the war, the United States finished the Lend-Lease program for the Soviets and the British. Then in 1947, the Communists announced that there would be no more cooperation with the non-Communists. Stalin believed that the West was trying to deceive him, and that they were out to get him. When the Soviet Union successfully tested their first atomic bomb, the United States finally had a reason to be scared.
