Genetic manipulation
One of the most controversial issues in America today is about genetic manipulation. Nearly all sectors of American society have a say about this matter, and so many sides to it have been argued. There are people for and against it. Yet, who really has the right to say what is right and what is wrong? Isn't the process of genetic manipulation a choice that the people have a right to take? There are some who say that genetic manipulation will lead to excessive individualism on the part of the people. People who are give a choice to choose their offspring's biological traits might abuse this kind of power. Still, modern America is slowly backing up the Human Genome Project. By permitting genetic manipulation in human embryos, American society allows the violation of a person's basic rights and promotes excessive individualism. The term "genetics" is the "biology of heredity; especially the study of mechanisms of hereditary transmission and variations of organismal characteristics." The term "engineering" is "the application of scientific principles to practical ends, as the design, construction and operation of efficient and economical structures, equipment and systems." " Loosely interpreted, this means that Americans have a right to deny the federal government any authority about rights that are not yet definite. They can weed out undesired traits and start inserting the genes they want. This just goes to show that while Americans do not fully accept the concept of genetic manipulation, they too see the benefits that it has and that they are slowly learning to accept it. In fact, in a survey held by Time Magazine, 60 percent of American society say that they would rule out a fatal disease if they were give the right to choose traits for themselves and their children. Because it has never been tried on a large scale before, there are unknown consequences if mankind does proceed with genetic manipulation. Studies have shown that 70 percent of American society would accept if give the option of checking their unborn babies of genetic diseases, and that 39 percent, or an alarmingly large one hundred million people, would have their babies aborted if found to carry these diseases. Their simplest wishes of "right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" are taken away. Then why is it that it has no say about whether it wants to live or not? What effect would a new wave of eugenics have on the United States? America is a country made up of many hundreds of different cultures, races, and ethnic backgrounds. Infertile couples may now have the chance to have babies. Studies of the human genome reveal that while "more than 99 percent of human DNA sequences are the same in every person who has ever lived, the human genome is so vast that tiny variations make us each unique. There is, however, another way to translate the same law. Although it is true that an individual does have a right to reproductive choice, it is also clearly seen that these genetic materials eventually become human beings themselves.
