One of the most controversial issues in America today is about genetic manipulation. Nearly all sectors of American society have a say about this matter, and so many sides to it have been argued. There are people for and against it. Yet, who really has the right to say what is right and what is wrong? Isn’t the process of genetic manipulation a choice that the people have a right to take? There are some who say that genetic manipulation will lead to excessive individualism on the part of the people. People who are give a choice to choose their offspring’s biological traits might abuse this kind of power. Still, modern America is slowly backing up the Human Genome Project. By permitting genetic manipulation in human embryos, American society allows the violation of a person’s basic rights and promotes excessive individualism.

What traits would science feel are undesirable? Nazi Germany justified their actions in World War II by stating that, “the State was justified in demanding the sacrifice of the minority to advance the interests of the majority…” Using the Holocaust as an example, it is frightening to imagine what traits the majority of the United States would feel are unwanted in re-engineered human beings. That is the legitimate killing of one hundred million babies. Children of the future might never hear of concepts such as AIDS or cancer. The child simply becomes another by product of the advancement of science. They get protection against interference with any rights that were not thought of in 1791. Afterwards, “designer-babies” are implanted into their mother’s wombs. ” That would be a direct interference by government, and it violates the 5th Amendment. Basically, the cornerstone of American democracy becomes hypocritical. Through the dictates of cultural relativism, America might feel the need to change something in humans now, and when time changes, they might regret making those decisions. Excessive power can lead to breaching the rights of others, especially to those who are affected by genetic engineering. The defects in a person are not gotten from external causes but rather, from inheriting bad genes. Take for example the knowledge of the cancer gene. When a couple sees that their unborn child is imperfect, chances are that the child might just be aborted.
Human genetic manipulation started with the James Watson and Francis Crick’s discovery that genes are ribbon-like strands of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) arranged in a double helix. They say that the privilege of being able to “create” people is a right given only to the Divine Creator, and that humans are not and should not be allowed that right.
