Brave New World
The society in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is primarily based upon consumption. Anything and everything that does not involve consumption is immediately deemed unorthodox. People, who do not consume, are detrimental towards the brave new world. Consumption is not only relevant; consumption is life in Brave New World. Events, such as solitude, that are not based on consumption have already been eliminated in Brave New World. Aspects of life, such as the love of nature, that are beneficial to people, who live in the twentieth or twenty-first century and do not cost money, could not be allowed in Brave New World. Everyone must consume, or they must produce the need for consumption. In an effort to increase transport consumption, citizens were conditioned to like nature. However, this ingenuity backfired when Epsilons went to the country and did not consume anything. As explained by the D.H.C. "we condition them to love all country sports. At the same time, we see to it that all country sports shall entail the use of elaborate apparatus. So that they consume manufactured articles as well as transport"
Citizens are conditioned to abhor nature. Instead, citizens are conditioned to have "an 'instinctive' hatred of books"(Huxley 22). The only Weigel 2reason why centrifugal bumble puppy exists is due to the fact that it is complicated and involves many pieces of equipment; thus the game increases consumption. Even history can be a victim of consumption. Furthermore, since consumption is life in Brave New World, its impact is everywhere. Non-consumption or preservation is unorthodox and not permitted. The term, "history is bunk"(Huxley 34) is a result of consumption. If either production or consumption does not occur, problems arise. In the words of Mustapha Mond, "Unorthodoxy threatens more than the life of a mere individual; it strikes at the Society itself"(Huxley 148). Bernard does not feel comfortable in crowds and enjoys being alone. Citizens are conditioned to feel security in crowds and reject solitude. A love of nature is unorthodox in Brave New World. For instance, when people were first conditioned to love nature, there was consumption of transportation, but no other consumption or production. Because Lenina cannot understand how solitude is enjoyable, she is Weigel 3bewildered.
