Privacy in Politics

Be It Resolved That the Private Lives of Political Figures Should Be Off Limits To the Media. The private lives of political figures should be off limits to the media for the following reasons:"h People (the general public) LOVE gossip. And stories about sex, drugs, violence and anything else that's "juicy" is appealing to the public. The media feels the need to give this information to the public. It does well for the ratings of the station. Tabloids have a tendency to twist stories around, or add a sex scandal here or there. Political figures are an important part to society and hold regions together. "h Things that happened in the past are an excellent example of why private lives should be off limits. For example, a lot of politicians had their teen years in the sixties. Drugs were just becoming popular and people were expressing their individuality and freedom. If a politician smoked marijuana, the usual response to that is "I didn't inhale". We all know they did. But the reason they say, "I didn't inhale" is because if they said "Yes, I smoked marijuana every day for 2 years, inhaled, and I don't deny that," the media's response is "He is a junkie, he's a criminal, he shouldn't be in office." If you came home one day, sat down to dinner with your family, turned on the news, and saw your father's face plastered across every TV station in the world with the caption at the bottom: Got Oral Sex from Temp in Office, how would you feel? What we have to remember is that these people on TV have families and are somebody's child. What ultimately drives story seekers and photographers alike is the unstable appetite for celebrity news and gossip by the "need to know" people who desire and/or demand more and more information on these celebrities. "h "The biggest problem of them all that affected almost every household in the English speaking world. She would be known forever as a slut. President Bush was often asked more about his daughter than he was about American economics or military. They would only focus on the bad stuff. The focus would be more on the stability of the family and how they interact with each other. If we make politicians private lives available to the public, there would be no more private life and no one would want to be a politician. People would see him/her as a family person. If a child is caught drinking under age or is charged with possession, the media will tell the public that there are no rule at home and that lead to a "wild child". President Bush's daughter Jenna received a lot of negative attention when she was caught drinking under age a few months ago. He could not go out without being recognized as "the guy who had oral sex at his work place". If the child grows up and kills someone while driving drunk, all politics will be turned away and the questions he/she receives will be directed to the trial of their child.
