A Comparison Between Luther and Calvin's BeliefsThe Reformation began by Martin Luther was sweeping religious mass movement that divided the Christian world and led to the birth of Protestantism. Many views of Luther and Calvin were different towards political authority and social order. Calvinists, however, were allowed much more disobedience and they eventually developed political theories that supported constitutional government, representative government, and the right of people to change their government. The connection between the two philosophies was in the basic religious theories that were the foundation of Protestantism under Luther. These religious theories such as the superiority of faith over good works, the Bible as the basis for all Christian teachings, and the universal priesthood of all believers proclaimed much of Luther and Calvin's attitudes toward social order. Calvinism, of course, being derived from Protestantism had many beliefs based on the guidelines that Luther had taught. The effects of which can be seen by the practices of their followers for years to come. This belief, which was not shared with Lutherans, forced each Calvinists to try to be a successful and religious person in order to prove that they were on of the Elect. Because Luther and Calvin's teachings were similar in the respects before stated, the societies based upon the teachings of these two men were also similar in those respects. There are, however, many differences between Calvin and Luther's views on social order and especially on political authority. Luther also feared anarchy and believed that people should accept their place along the hierarchy in the social order. Luther and Calvin had similar and different attitudes toward political authority and social order. Luther believed that in spite God being the sole importance in a man's life one should always be obedient to authority. Also, the belief in predestination in effect created the entire Calvinist social order. Luther's basic religious theories were the similarities between Luther and Calvin's attitudes toward social order.
