Glass Menagerie
The gentleman caller in Tennessee William's "The Glass Menagerie" does represent the hopes and dreams of all we wish for. As Amanda wished for a gentleman caller for Laura, Laura also wished for a gentleman caller to provide her with an escape from her current life. Laura was not desperately trying to get away from her situation like Tom was, however Laura wanted to. Laura portrayed that she escaped to her glass menagerie, so that she would not have to face her reality. In Laura's dream for escape, she keeps her feelings towards Jim from high school. Laura kept those feelings going because they were her hope for love, and one day escape. In our society today, everyone grows up with the American dream of finding their true love, marrying their love, having a family, and living happily ever after. This idea is instilled in us from the time we are young, perhaps from fairytales, and fantasy stories we are often told as children. When little girls are playing with Barbie and Ken dolls, it is common to portray the dolls as getting married, having a family, and then moving into their dream house where they all live together forever. Another
However, one must not live completely in a fairytale world as Amanda does with her constant pursuit for a gentleman caller for Laura. That way, one does not become too distraught when some dreams do not come true. Laura's dream to me was just to be normal, she appeared to want to be like everyone else, but due to her handicap she did not feel as if she was good enough or worthy of having these dreams and gentleman callers, thus she retreats to her glass menagerie. example is that little girls often act out their weddings, and what their future family will be like. Although Jim could not pursue a relationship with Laura because of his relationship with another girl, Jim showed Laura a sense of self worth, and gave her hope that there is someone or something else out there for her too. Hopes and dreams give us something to wish for, and we oftentimes work for these goals harder in order to make them come true. It is normal and healthy for people to have hopes, and to believe in their dreams. If I had all my wishes come true as a young girl, I am not sure they would be dreams now, but rather nightmares. The gentleman caller is an important character in this play because it shows how everyone has that hope, goal, or dream they want to reach or have come true. In fact, most girls can tell you exactly what their dream man will look like, and act like from an early age, and Laura held onto these hopes and dreams as we all do. Laura's brother Tom also lived in a dream world of his own. That is why hopes and dreams are so wonderful, they give us a sense of fantasy, and we are able to escape our present situations. It reminds me of a song that says to thank god for unanswered prayers. Tom could not wait to get out of the situation he was in so that he may pursue his dreams of writing.
