Music Censorship
Music censorship has been a very controversial subject for the past two or more decades. Many people believe that the words and phrases in songs are inappropriate. But on the other hand, some think that it is their right to say what they want. The argument in music censorship is basically, are kids affected by inappropriate songs? People who say that are not affected, are very wrong. Because what people listen do affect what they do, how they dress and how they act. There are many songs that I think children should not be able to listen to, for example, Nirvana's song Rape Me. This songs is played on the radio, were anybody can hear it. Also, Turn Me On Mr. Deadman by Union Underground. I believe that kids should not listen to this. They are too young to listen to songs like that because they don't have enough common sense to tell what is right from wrong, and they might take what the artist of the song is saying, literally.
Music is simply a "reflection of negativity", but it does not have the power to create social problems. There have been many bills that have tried to be enforced, but they have been turned down over and over again. I'm not sure to what degree it should be censored, but I wouldn't my little sister listening to songs that are all about sex, drugs and violence. Every generation rebels against their parents, it is only natural. Those that are opposed to music being censored think that music doesn't effect how people think. Young kids are not yet mature enough to listen to music that isn't meant for them. Each person will choose a position based on his or her own beliefs on the topic. The government started to label music CD's, but people say that those labels actually make kids go out and buy it because it has the label. In fact, a group of parents formed and organization called the Parent's Music Resource Center (PMRC). There will generally always be something controversial about censorship in music. The question of music censorship has been going on for a great stretch of time, and it seems as if it will continue to last for years and years to come. They abuse the power by putting lyrics that are not appropriate, in the song. All music is not intended for everyone. They will take it the wrong way and get themselves into trouble. I also believe that music has a part in teen and youth violence.
