Baseball Through foreign eyes
Our church told us that we would be helping someone in need that had no money and no place to go. I pictured someone local who was having a hard time, but when I saw him for the first time I was shocked. He was tall, had a dark shade of skin, black hair, and spoke very little English. The first week was weird for me--it's not like I've never seen a foreigner before; I just never lived with one. I eventually returned to my normal routine, and became friends with our guest. One day he was watching a baseball game on TV and I asked him if he had ever been to a game before; he said "American Baseball? No..." From that, I thought it would be "cool" to take him to a major league baseball game, because he did not have that opportunity in his own country. The first thing I did was to check the Oriole's schedule (hometown team) on the Internet to see the best time to go. The foreigner had seen computers before, just never the internet. I tried to give him a brief summary on how the internet works but it was too broad a subject; I ended up confusing him. I punched in the official site of the Orioles in the address bar of
I said "You have not seen anything yet. We entered Camden Yards at Eutaw Street, right behind the ballpark. com/ then clicked on "schedule" on the upper menu of the web site. Parking in stadium lots can be a problem; we had to carefully avoid getting onto the I-395 entry ramp, but we were lucky and obtained a cheap spot on Pratt Street, just west of the park. We traveled half way around the park through the concourse to get to our section. I finally obtained two tickets for the left field lower box, section 12. Then we walked down the bleachers into our seats and enjoyed the show. The expression on the foreigner's face just said "Wow". Just in front of gate H is a statue dedicated to Babe Ruth, although it didn't really look like him. It made me realize how fortunate I am to be free and able to attend simple things such as a baseball game. My partner was wide eyed and in owe of his surroundings. Then I called ticket master (888-848-BIRD) to check availability and pricing of seats.
