Throughout history, there have been many important documents that have contributed to the development of the democratic society that the United States of America holds today. Early English settlers brought with them the knowledge of a political system that had been in the making for centuries. The type of political system that the settlers knew was from 17th-century England, but a lot of the ideas came from varying places like Africa, and India. and various times. Three important documents that played a role in the US's society would include The Mayflower Compact, The English Bill of Rights, and The English Petition of Rights. If someone was to get in trouble, they were supposed to be allowed to have due process which meant that if you got in trouble in a little city, you could work you way up the list of important people to speak your mind and fight for you rights. The English Bill of Rights of 1689 dealt with English immigrants. The most important protection was the right to trial by jury and the right of habeas corpus, which prevented the government from putting people in jail for no reason. Due to the English Bill of Rights, our nation has built on, changed, and added to the ideas that Settlers brought with them. Because of the Mayflower Compact, governments were now starting to be self-governed. It was an agreement that said the Pilgrims would govern themselves. The English Petition of Rights of 1628 was when members of the Parliament demanded that King Charles I to STOP charging taxes without Parliaments consent. Plainly, The Mayflower Compact, The English Bill of Rights, and The English Petition of Rights played a role in the United States's democratic society. Although the petition did little change to King Charles's authoritarian rule, it later became an vital part of the Constitution of the United States. Also, that he stop putting up soldiers and sailors to live in the homes of private citizens and that no subject be imprisoned without a probable cause.
