Explain the extent to which Germany was transformed into a totalitarian state between 1933-1945.

The rise of the Nazi Party in Germany and their eventual accession to power marked the beginnings of a totalitarian state from 1933 to 1945. Under the rule of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party, Germany was transformed from one of the most democratic nations in the world to a state with one man at the helm. This radical and continual change, and the realisation and formation of a totalitarian state were not complete for many years after 1933. The Nazi Party under Hitler’s directive authority cemented into Germany an ideology that accepted the actions of their leader as if it was the very will of a supreme being.

The period of change, and its continuity is attributed to a number of factors. By looking at how Hitler created the new Nazi State, and by understanding how it was maintained helps to evaluate the extent to which a totalitarian state was established.

His first decision as Chancellor was to call for new elections for March. Albert Speer, Hitler’s favourite architect explains that, “…while he (Hitler) allowed the party to invade every other sphere of government and public policy, he kept out of industry…which he needed to preform at maximum efficiency as quickly as possible”. Goebbels knew the importance of this tool as shown through his instructions to his staff “I consider the radio to be the most modern and most crucial instrument that exists for influencing the masses… At all cost avoid being boring”.

The control they exerted upon the German society was unrestrained. On the next day, the SA leadership were executed. Hitler then passed a law to abolish the position of President, and to combine the offices of President and Chancellor. The Jews were defenceless and those that remained had no rights to protect their lives. Had Hitler felt the need to take control over German industry there exist no evidence to suggest any factors that would stop him from doing so.

Within the political system Hitler, as soon as he had become Chancellor on January 30 1933, set out to make himself legal dictator. Before the Nazis came to power they were an accepted part of German society. A system of terror and police control. On the very next day the Nazis gained the result they wanted.

The Radio was one of the most important medians for Goebbels to project his propaganda.
