Some History of Witchcraft
The story of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis could be taken as warnings to the Hebrew people to stay away from Goddess worshiping religions. The following is a detailed summary of the story from the book of Genesis:God created the Garden of Eden and placed man inside to be its gardener. He tells man, who is later named Adam, not to eat any fruit from the tree in the center. This tree is called the Tree of Conscience or Knowledge. Then God decided to make man a companion, and so he took a rib from man and made it into a woman. Adam claims that "her name is 'woman' because she was taken out of a man" (Genesis 2:23. pg 2).The serpent comes along and questions woman about the forbidden fruit. The serpent says that God does not want them to eat the fruit because "the instant you eat it you will become like him, for your eyes will be opened- you will be able to distinguish good from evil!" (Genesis 3:5. pg 2). So the woman eats the fruit and has the man eat some too. "And as they ate it, suddenly they became aware of their nakedness, and were embarrassed. So they strung fig leaves together to cover themselves around the hips" (Genesis 3:7. pg 2)
In my search, I found six examples. This response also gives the priests something to preach about in church. . (2) The serpent tempts the woman to eat the forbidden fruit. However, this evil spirit did not have more power than their completely good god did. They give sermons on how we should not give in to temptation, and follow the evil ways of Satan. God puts a curse on the soil so that man will toil to make a living from it until he dies. His plan is to actively seek and ruin the souls of mankind, so that they are under his power. Therefore, they do not understand how there can be one god who is omnipotent and all good, yet there is evidence of evil in the world. The man is cursed for listening to women, and he must work the earth until he dies. Dualism is the belief in two separate supreme beings, one being bad and the other good (Russell, pg 33). This was later translated into Greek as diabolos, then the Latin word diabolus. Therefore, she is weak and susceptible to evil persuasions. The last translation was into the English devil (Russell, pg 33).
