A Good Man is Hard to Find

             "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is grotesque tale of evil epitomized through two very different characters, yet are surprisingly similar. When one thinks of a grandmother, the words, "dear and old" come to mind. So normally, one would naturally expect the grandmother to represent a pure goodness and a serial killer, on the other hand is precisely the opposite in this case. Similarly, one would expect the old woman to depict life and the Misfit death, yet again in this story it portrays the opposite. But most importantly the both represent two depictions of evil. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" exemplifies through this traveling narrative that life without a spirituality is a living death, but ironically it is through her serendipic meeting with the Misfit, even though it is fatal, she finds salvation through her own spiritual epiphany. In Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" the two portrayals of evil are symbolized through grandmother and the Misfit.
             This fateful meeting occurred when the car occupied by the grandmother and her dysfunctional family make a turn for the worst. This turn is caused by grandmother's wise tale that there a large sum of money located in a house, when this Agatha Christie search turns tragic. She associates this home with Southern gentility that she believes her parrot-like son, his vegetable-like wife, and ignorant, bratty children lack. The car proceeds flips over and is destroyed, much like the family's lives.
             The grandmother falsely associates being well dressed and respectful with Godliness. The story refutes this idea through a grotesque portrayal that there is not correlation because there is only Godliness. It lucidly says that one is either a believer or one is not, and the Grandmother is not.
