Terrorism

             Terrorism can no longer be looked upon as "someone else's problem", as the rise of international terrorist organizations presents a threat to the national security of all nations and must be regarded with the utmost importance. To completely comprehend the severity of the current situation, an objective definition of, a recent example of, and the fight against terrorism must be adequately examined and fully understood. Terrorism affects everyone everywhere and must be taken seriously if the global community is to deal with it effectively.
             Terrorism is often associated with car bombs, kidnapping, and hostage situations. But few know the true definition of terrorism, as there really is no official international agreement upon one. Just like in any conflict, there are two or more viewpoints in every act of terrorism and therefore it is difficult for all sides to come to an agreement upon a definition, as each side will have their own subjective and biased opinion on exactly what terrorism is. Once terrorism can be acceptably defined the world will be able to distinguish what groups are actually terrorist organizations. A globally accepted definition is the first step to fighting international terrorism, as it will allow governments to fight terrorism head-on without the question of what it is.
             "Terrorism is the intentional use of, or threat to use violence against civilians or against civilian targets, in order to attain political aims." 1
             This definition by Boaz Ganor of the International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism outlines an acceptable, objective, and unbiased definition of terrorism. It states that it is the intentional use of violence against civilians not accidental civilian casualties caused by an attack against non-civilian targets that constitutes terrorism.
